Homeschool Support Group
MACC offers a homeschool support group called Mid Atlantic Christian Academy (MACA). The program includes two components: a homeschool umbrella available to church members and a homeschool co-op open to all local homeschool families.
MACA Umbrella
The MACA umbrella is legally recognized by the state of Maryland to serve as an umbrella to oversee home teaching in place of county oversight. The umbrella offers support to families at MACC with children in grades K - 12th. This umbrella is open only to families who consider MACC their church home – they attend MACC on Sundays and are involved there.
The umbrella provides guidance for planning the school year as desired and does two end-of-semester reviews (in January and June) of the students' work as required by law. Each umbrella family will be assigned a Supervising Mentor (SM) – a more experienced member of the umbrella. The goal of the Christian umbrella is to "spur one another on toward love and good works" in the areas of teaching our children and leading them to Jesus.
The cost of the umbrella is $20 per family for the year. At this point, MACA does not offer high school transcripts, diplomas, or a graduation ceremony.
Parents choose the curriculum and methods to best meet the educational needs of each child. The required subjects in Maryland are English, math, science, social studies, art, music, PE, and health. Maryland requires "regular, thorough instruction" in these subjects. The MACA umbrella also requires members to plan how they will teach their kids about God and the Bible, since the time we have to influence our children is short, and the Bible is the foundation of our understanding of the world and God’s plan for it.
Enrollment for the MACA umbrella takes place in July for the upcoming school year. Please contact Julie at maca.umbrella@gmail.com for more information about enrolling or with any questions.
MACA Classes
The MACA classes are open to any local homeschooler. The tutors are fun and experienced teachers. Each class offered usually carries a fee (around $50 plus maybe a supply fee, for a 10-week class). Parents are required to stay on the MACC campus during the class, and are sometimes asked to help, or offered a reduced fee for helping. You could sign up for whichever class(es) fit your family's needs, first come, first serve. Classes we have had this past year include art, PE games, golf, basketball, health, drama, book club, and Lego challenge club. The classes take place weekly on either Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays.
Sign ups are emailed out as the teachers set up their classes, which will start either in September for the fall, or January for the spring, plus often at least a couple classes for the late spring. To be added to the email distribution list for class information/ sign ups, please email Julie at maca.umbrella@gmail.org. A link to class sign-ups will also appear here as classes become available. Lastly, there is a facebook page called "MACA for Homeschoolers (Mid Atlantic Christian Academy)" which also gives information on upcoming classes and events, and you are welcome to join that if you are on facebook.
